“VKei“ “I really want to see these 5“ An interview right before Versailles‘ complete come-back and KAMIJO’s hit
In 8/7 in Maihama Amphitheatre will be held Versailles‘ “Chateau de Versailles“ complete come-back live show. It’s been decided that KAMIJO the vocalist will return during the come-back as a frontman.
–Finally, the Versailles complete come-back live show in 8/7 in Maihama Amphitheatre approached very quickly, right?
KAMIJO: After 3 years and 8 months.
–It’s about to pass, right?
KAMIJO: I’ve been doing my solo activities, so I really haven’t realized how the time flows. It’s like a blink of time.
— When you revealed the complete come-back a few days ago, it echoed all over the world.
KAMIJO: That’s right. Versailles is a band which gets support not only from Japan, but also from all over the world, that’s why the first publication was through YouTube. After the publication the information was spread in one breath and I once again felt there were lot of people who were really looking forward to it.
When we decided to come back, it wasn’t like “Let’s do it, because fans want us to“ but the reason was “Let’s come back, because there’s a future for Versailles and a path we can walk on.“
–So, when you stopped your activity about 4 years ago, you didn’t see a future for Versailles?
KAMIJO: That’s right, I really didn’t see it (bitter smile).
–So, the reason for come-back is that you started to see future for Versailles again?
KAMIJO: In the first place, a band is “one assembly.“ Where in for example, it’s smaller than a school company, let’s say it’s assembly just like the smallest unit.
This assembly walks in only one direction, isn’t it necessary to have a big proper objective? I think I didn’t always have the objective and conviction and it’s limiting when you don’t have the match.
Until that Versailles used to have different activities and it became difficult to have a unity of band’s objective and every member’s conviction. Briefly, this was the current status before the activity pause.
–I guess it was like sliding into members time.
KAMIJO: Better to say, a band isn’t just a sense of purpose, it includes the whole making and management, and that’s what we couldn‘t do all together.
However, at the time of the come-back, we could do it clearly.
And that’s why we have Versailles now. All steps like bad feelings are gone (laugh). I hope we’ll be able to fulfill expectations.
–During the activity pause, you’ve been doing your solo activity as KAMIJO, have you watched the activities of the other members?
KAMIJO: Of course I have. I always like to watch activities of others, I could bring it home even during making my own activities, it was very stimulating. In reverse, it’s a motivation we cannot do together. It’s like a rivality in good meaning, it was like harvesting.
–During your solo activities you made some recital contests with various musicans, was it a motivation, too?
KAMIJO: More like motivation it became a form of studying. In band I could entrust to band members with some parts, but since I started my solo career I had to analyze music’s small parts. Furthermore, together with amazing musicians, I started to see necessary things by myself and I started to create things by myself.
Of course, I’m going to continue with my solo activites even now, but after this I’ll really focus on Versailles‘ activities.
–Is the conception for the show in 8/7 in Maihama Amphitheatre already decided?
KAMIJO: Versailles is unforgetable metal band and we’re surely made of metal, we’re even “VisualKei“ inside our hearts and I can say our intention we want to keep at is to make over the “VisualKei.“
I don’t want to categorize VisualKei, it’s not a rage when you listen to it, it’s like a live show including fascinating part or I should say I want to do a live show in which the V in Versailles is more for VisualKei.
–Versailles‘ aesthetic may overflow to a new artists photos, right?
KAMIJO: We’ll attack the idea of sitting on horseback now, the came-out photo has an intention of marching. The horse’s name’s “Kanbee“, it’s foreign and Japanese name (laugh).
I think for Versailles, the visual image in beauty wasn’t only handsome, but also to transfer something in one photo, which we were able to do. I think it was visible.
–It could express the artistic photo to the world and the merit of VisualKei.
KAMIJO: Especially one part which created the photo while using the shadow was fit before the come-back.
In light it flies dizzingly beautifully, that’s why it looks so nicely. This photo is not like that, we wanted it to include a story and a message, and it was particularly about lightening.
The problem is we always wanted a story and a message to be felt in our photos. When I was doing my solo activities, although however I put a message in my visuals, it was certainly something to think about. And we can do it glitzy now in Versailles.
–You’re well aware of all the details, right?
KAMIJO: It includes costumes, and that became a luxurious and gorgeous issue now in Versailles.
–I can’t wait.
KAMIJO: It’s the “This is Versailles“ visage.
–Every member of Versailles acts very gracefully during your live shows.
KAMIJO: I think it’s very difficult even for guitarists to play in their costumes. In the first place in dresses it’s not possible to see the foot pedals. And yet by repeating the practise, they immensely exert to do this moves always from a habitual rehearsal.
Every member is able to stage wearing their costumes and that’s not only druing the performances and not only costumes, and I found it amazing of them.
So, I’ve done my solo career as well, but I’m somebody who doesn‘t like rivality between band members at all, we three with Hizaki and Teru are the top spotlit persons because they are the twin leaders guitarists. MASASHI and YUKI properly support the rhytm, and that’s why we’re a band with such a good balance.
–Have you already decided about your stage set?
KAMIJO: Usually there’s a consciousness of an unbuilt palace on the Versailles‘ stage. When we finish building the castle’s set, we end up going too far.
–Speaking of Versailles, you build the palace in France during your live shows.
KAMIJO: We’ve adopted the “Violence of Beauty“ as the theme, if we were beautiful, the set and the lightening like pulling a nature would be it. Because it becomes the colour of rock on the stage.
–Amphitheatre has various stage settings, doesn’t it?
KAMIJO: I won’t fly (decisively).
–I was about to asky ou if you’re gonna do it (laugh).
KAMIJO: When you’re talking about it… once I flied in Tokyo Kinema Club and I won’t do it again (laugh). I guess I’ll never understand these flying people.
–“I’ll never understand these flying people,“ indeed…
KAMIJO: First of all, I’d love to see us five. I want to see us Versailles, furthermore I can feel it from all members.
–Do you have any activity’s vision now?
KAMIJO: Now in 9/14 our best album “ The Greatest Hits 2007-2016“ is coming out.
In 13 songs members selected the best 11 songs from all previous independent major songs and then we added 2 new songs so it became a retake best album.
–So you’ve recorded two brand new songs.
KAMIJO: Me and Hizaki have each written one song. When we were thinking about which new song would fit the best to the taste of Versailles’ come-back we came up with those two. We expect more from those we created (laugh).
Even the musical composition which was edited by the best and all members‘ great technique merge together, moreover we have many songs which start with MASASHI’s bass, I really look forward to the new sound of Versailles. The production is now in the final as well, after that when a producer completes the steps, then we can finally say we’ve all finished.
–When you’re talking to me, it sounds like Versailles has very strong self-confidence.From now on what are you planning to do?
KAMIJO: When you’re asking… next year in the Amphitheatre we’re going to celebrate the 10th anniversary and I hope we’ll be able to tell the whole Versailles‘ story.
But, although we’re not in the original formation anymore, we still have good feelings as one band.”
